If you are sick and tired of looking at the same old floor in your kitchen, but don't really
have the money to replace your floor, why not consider vinyl floor tiles. It is a very cheap alternative and will give you a look that people will have a
hard time realizing how little you spent. They are also easy enough to do on your own so that hiring a contractor will not be necessary.
The first step is to figure out how much tile you are actually going to have to buy. This is
figured pretty easy as all you need is a tape measure. Measure the room from wall to wall and find the deepest point. When you have these two numbers,
multiply them out and you will know how many tiles you are going to need. If your room is 12x10, 120 12” tiles will do the trick. However you may be
best served to add a few extra for the perimeter gaps.
From there, you are going to have to pick out the tile that you want to use. This involves
not only the design, but also the way that it is going to be put on the floor. Figure out the installation option first and then choose your design.
Something that many people forget to do is allow the tile to adjust to the room that it is
going to be used in. Because of the fact that the tile will expand and contract with the temperature of the room, you cannot just run out and buy it and
throw it down. You should bring it home and let it sit in the room that it is getting used in for a few days to get acclimated.
At this point, you are going to need to prepare the surface that it is going down on. If the
flooring is not leveled, get it level. If you are putting it down on concrete or any other surface, make sure the floor is clean and free of all debris. If
there are dips or digs in the floor, you will need to fill them in before starting the project.
The last step is to get the tile down on the floor. To do this properly you should set a
chalk line and divide the room into quarters for lines of reference. You will then want to put the vinyl floor tiles down without adhesive to get the layout
that you want and finally, you can put it down for real.
It is as simple as that. Now you have a new floor that can be put down over a weekend and
all it costs you is the tile and some of your time.
